Wednesday’s Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500
September 19, 2018 by Chris LangeSeptember 19, 2018: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,907.94. The DJIA closed up 0.6% at 26,406.57. Separately, the Nasdaq was flat at 7,950.04.
Wednesday was a positive day for the broad U.S. markets with the S&P 500 and the Dow within points of their all-time highs. Crude oil pushed back above $70 in the session as well. The S&P 500 sectors were split down the middle. The most positive sectors were financials and materials up 1.8% and 1.2%. The worst performing sectors were utilities and real estate down 2.2% and 0.9%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen trading up 1.9% at $71.17.
Gold was last seen trading down 0.5% at $1,208.40.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ: CPRT) which fell about 14% to $55.31. The stock’s 52-week range is $33.30 to $67.08. Volume was 13.7 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.3 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE: SWN) which traded up about 6% at $5.51. The stock’s 52-week range is $3.42 to $6.72. Volume was about 23 million compared to the daily average volume of 17.8 million.
