Wednesday’s Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

October 17, 2018: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,809.22. The DJIA closed down 0.4% at 25,708.82. Separately, the Nasdaq closed flat at 7,642.70.

Wednesday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets. Despite a strong showing just yesterday, the bears won today. Crude oil also suffered a massive drop in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The most positive sectors were financials and health care up 0.6%, and 0.4%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were materials and energy, each up 1.0%.

Crude oil was last seen trading down 2.7% at $70.00.

Gold was last seen trading down 0.4% at $1,226.30.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) which fell by about 8% to $133.53. The stock’s 52-week range is $133.42 to $171.13. Volume was about 18 million compared to the daily average volume of 4.6 million.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close was United Continental Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: UAL) which traded up 6% at $88.50. The stock’s 52-week range is $56.51 to $91.39. Volume was over 9 million compared to the daily average volume of 3.3 million.
