Thanksgiving Hours for 50 Retailers

October 27, 2016 by Paul Ausick

U.S. retailers and malls have been puzzling over whether to remain open on the Thanksgiving holiday for a few years now. More than half of all Americans surveyed do not want stores open on the holiday, and more than a third are strongly opposed to stores being open on Thanksgiving Day.

That won’t deter most retailers from being open for business on the holiday, even though most now have online shopping available. Still, more people surveyed (more than 14%) say they will shop only in brick-and-mortar stores, compared with about 13.6% who plan to shop only online and about 12% who say they will shop in both.

Researchers at BestBlackFriday.com have contacted 50 retailers and the 25 largest shopping malls in the country and have put together a list of store and mall hours for the Black Friday weekend. Of the 50 stores included in the survey, only six report that they plan to be open on Thanksgiving Day. Among that group are Macy’s Inc. (NYSE: M), Shoe Carnival Inc. (NASDAQ: SCVL) and Stein Mart Inc. (NASDAQ: SMRT).

The researchers also noted that both Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE: KSS) and Sears Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD) are expected to be open, but that is currently unconfirmed.

Among U.S. shopping malls, just three of 13 that responded to the survey say they’ll be closed. The Mall of America in Minneapolis announced a few weeks ago that it will be closed on the holiday, and it has been joined by the Scottsdale, Arizona, Fashion Square mall and the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Massachusetts.
