There have been spotty releases about hours when retailers plan to open on Thanksgiving and Black Friday as they jockey to fulfill demand in a troubled retail market. Some retailers will not be open at all on Thanksgiving. Others will open late in the day, close overnight and then reopen very early on Black Friday. There is no pattern to the decisions, and most retailers will not later announce whether their plans have worked, at least based on recent history.

The pace for hours has been set by the largest retailers. Walmart will open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Target and Best Buy will open their stores at 5 p.m. Other retailers that decide not to open until Black Friday risk losing market share to the leaders.

BestBlackFriday.com, which tracks retailer hours and special sales, has released most Thanksgiving/Black Friday store hours already. Discounted items will range into the thousands. This is for two reasons. The first is to catch customers at the earliest point of their shopping decisions. The other is the hope that if people come to store to buy one item on sale, they will use the opportunity to buy other merchandise.

Overall, across the industry, holiday retail is forecast to rise. The National Retail Federation’s outlook is “that holiday retail sales in November and December will be up between 4.3 percent and 4.8 percent over 2017 for a total between $717.45 billion and $720.89 billion.” Which retailers will benefit will be uneven. Some retailers, like Sears and J.C. Penney, are fighting for their lives and poor holiday sales could fatally wound them.

All major retailers also have announced or are rumored to set hours for e-commerce sales. BestBlackFriday.com shows that e-commerce deals will match those in stores. Some retailers will allow customers to buy online and pick up items at stores.
