Short Sellers Wary of 3D Printing Stocks

Short interest fell during the two-week reporting period ending August 31 on three of four 3D printing stocks we follow. Trading action slowed as well, with days to cover rising on three of the four stocks.

Short interest in 3D Systems Corp. (NYSE: DDD) dropped by 8.8% to 25.56 million shares. Some 23.2% of the company’s float was short. Days to cover rose from five to nine. In the two-week short interest period, the share price rose by 10.5%. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $7.92 to $21.78, and shares closed at $18.48 on Wednesday, up about 0.2% on the day.

Stratasys Ltd. (NASDAQ: SSYS) saw short interest fall by 10.5% in the final two weeks of August to about 8.13 million shares or 16.2% of the company’s float. Days to cover rose from nine to 13. The share price rose by about 5.1% in the two weeks, and the stock closed at $23.48 on Wednesday, up about 0.5% for the day, in a 52-week range of $17.17 to $26.17.

Short interest in ExOne Co. (NASDAQ: XONE) fell by 9.9% to 2.33 million shares. About 24% of the company’s shares were short. ExOne’s share price soared by nearly 24% in the period ending August 31. The stock’s 52-week range is $6.16 to $12.50, and shares closed at $8.93 on Wednesday, up about 4.8% for the day. Days to cover rose from 10 to 16.

Short interest in Voxeljet A.G. (NYSE: VJET) increased by 2% to 335,062 American depositary shares, with days to cover falling from six to three. Voxeljet added about 29.4% for the two-week period and closed at $3.96 on Wednesday, down about 1% for the day, in a 52-week range of $3.07 to $6.37.
