Consumer Confidence Falls Off A Cliff
Consumer confidence plunged in June according to The Conference Board. “The Consumer Confidence Index, which had been on the rise for three consecutive months, declined sharply in June. The Index now stands at 52.9 (1985=100), down from 62.7 in May.…

“The Consumer Confidence Index, which had been on the rise for three consecutive months, declined sharply in June. The Index now stands at 52.9 (1985=100), down from 62.7 in May. The Present Situation Index decreased to 25.5 from 29.8. The Expectations Index declined to 71.2 from 84.6 last month.”
The news is another indication that the economy is in the process of falling apart and that the situation may get worse. Unemployment now appears to be staying at high levels and may not drop below 9.5% this year. Congress has refused to extend benefits for the jobless so hundreds of thousands of people will lose their entire social safety net.
GDP for Q2 will be out in a week and will probably come in well under forecasts.
