GM (NYSE: GM) disclosed that its posted record sales in China last year. The announcement comes on the heels of similar claims by VW. The two are the largest car companies in the People’s Republic based on sales. The Chinese market is the largest in the world based on volume–now about 16 million. It passed the US two years ago.
GM said that sold 2.55 million vehicles in 2011, up 8.3% from the year before.
Many of GM’s cars are made and sold through joint ventures with local companies. The concern continues to rise that these firm will learn enough from GM to allow them to push the US company–and other multinationals–out of the market
The market is so large that nearly every major car company in the world says it expects improved sales there
