Gallup released new data on January unemployment. The data confirms a weak jobs market in January. Challenger Gray reported that layoffs rose in January (employers announced 53,486 planned job cuts last month, up 28 percent from 41,785 in December) . ADP reported that jobs added were at a slower pace than in December–170,000 vs 282,000 in the final month of 2011.
U.S. unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, increased slightly to 8.6% in January from 8.5% in December. Underemployment increased more sharply as a higher number of part-time workers sought full-time work.
