Nokia, the world’s largest handset company, will fire 4,000 workers at manufacturing operations in Finland, Hungary, and Mexico. Most of those jobs will go to Asia. Apple and HTC has already discovered the benefits of labor costs in that region, particularly in China.
Nokia has made the move as its sales continue to drop. It has not been able to effectively compete in the smartphone market. Its new joint venture with Microsoft which will load Nokia smartphones with the software firm’s Windows mobile OS may help, but that help could be several quarters away
