Barrick Gold, Veon Tumble into Friday's 52-Week Low Club

February 23, 2018: Here are four stocks trading with heavy volume among 88 equities making new 52-week lows in Friday’s session. On the NYSE advancers led decliners by about 6 to 1 and on the Nasdaq, advancers led decliners by more than 3 to 1.

Veon Ltd. (NASDAQ: VEON) traded down about 6.5% Friday and posted a new 52-week low of $2.87 after closing Thursday at $3.07. The stock’s 52-week high is $4.50. Volume was about six times the daily average of 3.8 million shares. The communications provider said Thursday that quarterly results were worse than expected due to a devaluation in foreign currency. Shares turned the corner later in the morning and the shares are on track to post a slight gain for the day.

Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: ABX) fell about 3% Friday to post a new 52-week low of $12.11 after closing at $12.48 on Thursday. The 52-week high is $20.36. Volume of about 16 million was 25% above the daily average. The company said yesterday that it sees a long-term drop in output and that it does not intend to seek growth just for the sake of growth.

MiMedx Group Inc. (NASDAQ: MDXG) dropped about 12% Friday to post a new 52-week low of $7.78. Shares closed at $8.88 on Thursday and the stock’s 52-week high is $18.25. Volume was over 11 million, about five times the daily average of around 2.4 million. The company postponed is quarterly report earlier this week in order to conduct an accounting review.

Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD) traded down about 6.7% Friday and posted a new 52-week low of $6.70 after closing Thursday at $7.18. The stock’s 52-week high is $15.66. Volume was around 7.8 million, nearly three times the daily average. The company reported quarter earnings Thursday morning and announced that it had rejected a buyout offer, that its executive chairman has retired, and it has appointed a new CEO.
