May 7, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.3% at 2,672.56. The DJIA closed up 0.4% at 24,356.56. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.8% at 7,265.21.
Monday was a decent day for the broad U.S. markets. Crude oil touched above $70 in the session but ultimately retreated by the close. The S&P 500 sectors were more or less split down the middle. The most positive sectors were technology and financials up 0.6% each. The worst performing sectors were consumer staples and utilities down 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively.
Crude oil relatively flat at $69.82.
Gold was flat at $1,314.40.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Monday was International Flabors & Fragrances Inc. (NYSE: IFF) which traded down about 10% at $127.28. The stock’s 52-week range is $126.08 to $157.40. Volume was 3.2 million compared to the daily average volume of about half a million.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Monday was Medtronic PLC (NYSE: MDT) which rose over 4% to $84.85. The stock’s 52-week range is $76.41 to $89.72. Volume was 9.6 million compared to the daily average volume of 5.2 million.
