Altcoin Open Interest Just Passed Bitcoin for the First Time Since December 2024. What That Actually Signals

For the first time in over a year, altcoin perpetual futures are carrying more leveraged exposure than Bitcoin, and the last time this crossover happened, several mid-cap tokens collapsed within weeks. Whether this signals a genuine altcoin season or a…

Open interest in altcoin perpetual futures moved above Bitcoin’s (CRYPTO:BTC) on September 6, the first time that has happened since December 2024. Bitcoin’s perpetual open interest reached about $23.9 billion that day, around 37% of the combined total. Meanwhile, the rest of the market, led by Zcash, Solana (CRYPTO:SOL), and XRP (CRYPTO:XRP), carried roughly $40 billion in open contracts.

The last time this crossover happened, several mid-cap altcoins corrected sharply within weeks. Does this current shift show demand building in altcoins, or have traders simply piled on leverage ahead of a market that cannot support it?

Why Has Altcoin Open Interest Surpassed Bitcoin?

Altcoin perpetual futures open interest passed Bitcoin’s on September 6, 2026, for the first time since December 2024, with Zcash driving most of the shift. ZEC’s open interest climbed to a record $2.4 billion in early September as the Zcash price surged 134% over 30 days, briefly touching $1,023 on September 4 after a single-day jump of about 20%.

That move forced $34 million in short positions to close, adding fresh contracts to a token that already carried heavy leverage relative to its size. A $2.4 billion open interest figure against Zcash’s roughly $19 billion market cap represents a much larger share of leveraged exposure than Bitcoin or Ethereum carry against their own market caps.

Solana and XRP added to the total without any single move as dramatic as Zcash’s, spreading new leverage across two tokens that already trade with heavy futures volume. Ethereum, BNB, and a long list of smaller tokens filled out the rest, meaning the crossover reflects broad participation across several altcoins.

Bitcoin’s perpetual open interest measured about $23.9 billion on September 6, just 37% of the combined total. The remaining 63%, roughly $40 billion, is spread across Ethereum, Solana, XRP, BNB, Zcash, and other altcoins, putting altcoin open interest close to $16.1 billion ahead of Bitcoin’s.

What Does Higher Altcoin Open Interest Signal About the Market?

Open interest counts every open contract, long and short alike, so a higher total does not by itself show traders leaning bullish. It simply shows more leveraged money entering the market, in either direction. Zcash’s move higher came with $34 million in short liquidations, meaning shorts getting forced out contributed to the increase alongside any new bullish bets. The total also rises mechanically when prices climb even if no new contracts open, since existing positions are worth more in dollar terms once the underlying token gains value.

Some of the increase looks tied to spot buying rather than leverage alone. Altcoin market capitalization outside the ten largest tokens has climbed above $200 billion, up more than 10% since the start of September, pointing to spot demand building alongside the futures activity. That combination separates this crossover from a pure leverage spike, but it does not remove the leverage risk built into the rally.

The last time altcoin open interest passed Bitcoin’s, in December 2024, several mid-cap tokens corrected sharply in the weeks that followed while Bitcoin held comparatively steady. That does not prove the same outcome is coming this time. Market structure, exchange composition, and leverage limits have all changed since 2024, and one earlier instance does not establish a reliable pattern. Regardless, the earlier crossover is the only precedent available, and it ended in forced selling.

Does the Shift Signal a New Altcoin Season?

An altcoin season needs more confirmation than one derivatives signal. Spot trading volume needs to rise across a wider group of altcoins, while funding rates remain positive without reaching extreme levels. Bitcoin dominance would also need to fall well below its current 59%. The Fear and Greed Index at 71 shows strong optimism, but it has not reached the extreme levels often seen near the end of speculative rallies. These indicators would show that demand is spreading beyond derivatives markets.

That distinction is important because higher open interest needs support from spot demand to last. Leverage can quickly push open interest higher, but those positions can unwind when prices stall or funding costs rise. Altcoins outside the top 10 have added about $200 billion in market value, suggesting that spot demand is already contributing to the move. However, that demand needs to keep growing if the current shift is going to last. A similar increase in open interest reversed within weeks after the December 2024 crossover.

The December 2024 reversal also highlights the risk in the current setup. Money is now flowing into altcoins through both spot and derivatives markets after a year of strong Bitcoin dominance. Heavy leverage in Zcash adds another risk because large leveraged positions can trigger sharp liquidations when prices reverse. The next two to three weeks should provide a clearer signal. If altcoin market value continues rising while open interest growth slows, the shift would look healthier. If leverage keeps rising faster than spot demand, the market could repeat the pattern seen in December 2024.
