Eight Altcoins Have Surged Three Times More Than Bitcoin in 30 Days. Is Altcoin Season Here, or Is This Just a Momentary Uptick?

Over the last 30 days, eight altcoins have seen returns at least three times greater than Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC). This impressive performance has led traders to wonder if we are entering an altcoin season. Leading the charge is NEAR Protocol (CRYPTO:NEAR), which has surged 121%, far outpacing Bitcoin’s 6.4% gain over the same period.

The other seven coins making waves are Sui (CRYPTO:SUI), Aave (CRYPTO:AAVE), Avalanche (CRYPTO:AVAX), Uniswap (CRYPTO:UNI), Litecoin (CRYPTO:LTC), Hedera (CRYPTO:HBAR), and Cardano (CRYPTO:ADA). Even Cardano, at the bottom of the list, boasts a respectable 20% gain—more than three times Bitcoin’s increase.

Traders often see such a leaderboard as potential evidence of an altcoin season. However, six of these eight coins have declined over the past week, and the Altcoin Season Index still hasn’t reached its critical levels. So, the question remains: Are we truly starting an altcoin season, or is this just a short-term bounce?

Altcoin Season Needs 75% of the Top 50 Coins to Beat Bitcoin

Altcoins are any cryptocurrencies aside from Bitcoin, and “altcoin season” describes a phase when traders shift funds out of Bitcoin and into smaller coins, leading to substantial gains for most altcoins. Conversely, a “Bitcoin season” occurs when Bitcoin outperforms the majority of the market.

The Altcoin Season Index formalizes this concept, declaring altcoin season only when 75% of the 50 largest coins outperform Bitcoin over a 90-day timeframe. As of October 10, 2026, the index is at 51, indicating that we are “not in Altcoin Season.” Remarkably, it has been 379 days since the last altcoin season and 39 days since the last Bitcoin season.

CoinMarketCap’s version of the index showed 61 on October 1, which also falls short of the 75 threshold. Both indexes intentionally measure a 90-day period to prevent a single strong month from prematurely indicating a season.

Only NEAR (up 13%) and Cardano (up 3%) have maintained an upward trend over the past week. Meanwhile, the other six coins have experienced declines.

Coin 30-Day Gain Multiple of Bitcoin’s Gain 7-Day Change
NEAR Protocol 120.7% 18.9x +13.0%
Sui 47.5% 7.4x -5.3%
Aave 40.4% 6.3x -4.9%
Avalanche 37.3% 5.8x -3.8%
Uniswap 25.0% 3.9x -18.9%
Litecoin 21.9% 3.4x -8.0%
Hedera 21.7% 3.4x -9.1%
Cardano 20.3% 3.2x +3.0%
Bitcoin 6.4% Benchmark -2.2%

Uniswap has taken the biggest hit, with its UNI token still up 25% over 30 days despite a 19% drop in the past week, erasing nearly half of its earlier gains. Similarly, Hedera has slipped by 9%, while Litecoin decreased by 8%.

This quick unwind points to a temporary bounce, since the rotation reversed within the same month it began. In a lasting trend, altcoins typically continue to outperform Bitcoin week after week, but many of these coins stopped that trend before the month ended.

Still, three reasons suggest the possibility of a longer rally. First, Bitcoin also dropped 2% over the past week, suggesting the altcoin declines occurred during a broader market dip rather than a rotation back into Bitcoin. Two, two of the eight coins are still climbing. Lastly, a one-week period is a brief timeframe for assessing market trends. Furthermore, the impressive 30-day gains took place without any clear news driving them.

All Eight Altcoins Still Trade Far Below Their All-Time Highs

A bigger concern for these coins is how far they fell before this recent recovery. Each of the eight coins is trading substantially below its all-time high. For instance, Avalanche is down 93% from its peak, while Cardano is down 92%, and Litecoin, Hedera, and Uniswap have each fallen between 83% and 85%.

Sui is down 79%, and NEAR and Aave are both down 74%. In contrast, Bitcoin is down 34% from its peak.

A coin that has lost more than 90% can still rise substantially and linger far below previous price levels, because the gain starts from a much lower base. For example, Cardano would need to increase roughly 12 times its current value to reclaim its prior record, making a 20% monthly gain seem minimal in that context. A leaderboard ranking by percentage gains tends to favor coins that faced the biggest declines, as they rebound from lower starting points.

Is Altcoin Season Here, or Just a Temporary Bounce?

The current 30-day outlook suggests the start of an altcoin season, but the evidence leans toward a bounce. Six of the eight coins have already turned negative over the past week, and the Altcoin Season Index stands at 51, far below the 75 threshold needed for a season call. A genuine altcoin season requires sustained outperformance across the 50 largest coins over several months, and a handful of coins showing short-term gains does not provide enough support for such a declaration.

For holders of these coins, the index serves as a vital indicator. A reading of 75 or higher would contradict the bounce scenario and signal the first altcoin season in 379 days. Conversely, if the index stays below that level and more of these eight coins decline over the next week, it may suggest the recent surge was more of a fleeting bounce than the start of a sustained altcoin season.
