While the irony of Steve Jobs being honored on a U.S. postage stamp is not lost on anybody in the technology world, it certainly highlights the incredible admiration with which the genius who started Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is regarded. While snail-mail was probably rarely used at Apple or the Jobs household in later years, it is a fitting tribute to a man compared to Thomas Edison and Henry Ford as an incredible American innovator.

The iconic leader of Apple joins a lineup of pop-culture favorites for the U.S. Post Service (USPS) commemorative stamps that will be issued for 2014, 2015 and the next few years. Jobs will be joined by the likes of Dora the Explorer, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, actor and five-term NRA president Charlton Heston, Peanuts, and Beatle John Lennon. Although the list has been made and some work has started, Susan McGowan, the postal service’s executive director for stamp services and corporate licensing, said the subjects “are subject to change” at any time.

Other luminaries expected to be released on stamps by the USPS this year include NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain, slain gay-rights activist Harvey Milk, rock singer Janis Joplin and guitarist Jimi Hendrix, as well as a stamp featuring celebrity chefs. Some of the additional names mentioned as highlights for 2015 include soul singer James Brown, late-night host of the Tonight Show Johnny Carson and a reissue of Elvis Presley, the USPS’s top-selling stamp, released with a value of 29 cents in 1993.

The addition of Steve Jobs to the list will probably mark the beginning of a long list of Silicon Valley legends that may grace stamps over the next 30 years and beyond. Others that might wind up on an envelope could include Bill Gates and Paul Allen from Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT), Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Larry Ellison from Oracle Corp. (NYSE: ORCL), Eric Schmidt and Sergey Brin from Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), and in the distant future even Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of social media giant Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB).

One thing is for sure. Silicon Valley legends are for the most part homegrown American. They deserve to be remembered for their incredible contributions to our nation — contributions that in many instances have changed the world as we know it.
