BMW Group reported global sales for May on Tuesday. The company’s total sales in the month were up 6.8% year-over-year, and year-to-date sales are up 17.7%. Both are records for the Germany-based automaker.

Sales of the company’s 3 Series rose 2.1% to 193,866, and the 4 Series has had sales of 35,253 units in the first five months of the year. The 4 Series was launched in November 2013. The newest BMW, the 2 Series, which launched in March, had sales of 7,842 in May.

The company’s May sales in the United States totaled 35,331 units for its BMW and Mini vehicles, or about 20% of the company’s global total. But passenger car sales in the United States were down 1.3% in May, with the higher priced models faring the worst. The company’s X series SUVs posted a U.S. sales gain of nearly 81% year-over-year, with the X3 model up 168%. But even here the United States accounts for just 8% of BMW’s sales.

A BMW executive said, “Customer demand in the USA is showing solid growth, as is the Americas region as a whole, whilst Asia continues to be strong. Sales this year in Europe are also showing some signs of recovery.”

BMW delivered 4,154 of its i3 electric vehicles worldwide and sold 336 in the United States in May.
