Of the 10 vehicles with the best resale value, five are pickup trucks, three are sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and just two are passenger cars. That should be no big surprise because trucks continue to be built to take more punishment and last longer than other vehicles.
That endurance and reliability translates into higher resale values. The experts at Kelley Blue Book (KBB) recently named their 2016 top 10 list of vehicles with the highest resale value.
The Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) Tacoma midsize pickup has the highest values of any vehicle in the KBB rankings, with a resale value of 72.9% after 36 months and 61.7% after 60 months. The truck has been completely redesigned for 2016.
Toyota’s 4Runner is the second-ranked vehicle on the list, with a resale value of 66.7% of the original purchase price after 36 months and 60.3% after 60 months.
Third in the ranking is the GMC Canyon midsize pickup from General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM), which boasts a resale value of 70.7% at the end of 36 months and 59.5% after 60 months.
Also from GM, the Chevy Colorado midsize pickup retains 70% of its value after 36 months and 58.6% after 60 months. The Canyon and the Colorado are not identical twins with different branding, but the two are certainly blood brothers.
Fifth in the ranking is the Jeep Wrangler from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (NYSE: FCAU) with a 36-month resale value of 65.6% of the purchase price and a 60-month resale value of 54.9%.
Another Toyota, this time the full-size Tundra pickup, is ranked sixth. After 36 months the resale value of this truck is 64.1% of the purchase price and after 60 months the value is 53.8%.
The WRX from Subaru is ranked seventh by KBB with a 36-month resale value of 65.2% and a 60-month value of 50.8%.
The eighth-best resale value is attached to the Chevy Camaro, which was completely redesigned for 2016. The sporty car’s 36-month resale value is 61% and its 60-month value is 49% of the purchase price.
The GMC Sierra full-size pickup is ranked ninth with a resale value of 57% after 36 months and 48% after 60 months.
Closing out the list is the Subaru Forester compact SUV, with a resale value after 36 months of 59.3% and 47.3% after 60 months.
