Acme United Q3 2026: A Tariff Windfall Inflated the Beat
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 27, 2026.
The quarter's beat rests on a one-time $4.0 million IEEPA tariff refund booked against cost of goods sold, not on core demand, so the margin strength is unlikely to repeat. Record sales still came with help from the My Medic acquisition, and the Massachusetts DMT plant closure adds annual savings starting in 2027.

Acme United reported Q3 2026 earnings of $0.80 per diluted share, beating the consensus estimate, with revenue also above expectations and higher year over year. A single line item accounts for most of that upside.
A $4.0 million IEEPA tariff refund was recognized as a direct reduction in cost of goods sold during the quarter, delivering a substantial boost to gross margin that management and analysts both know will not repeat. The same quarter also absorbed DMT facility closure costs and related variable compensation expense, so the underlying margin picture is more complicated than the headline beat suggests.
Revenue growth had genuine support beyond the tariff item. The U.S. segment posted a 20% sales increase on strong back-to-school demand, the January 2026 acquisition of My Medic added incremental revenue, and Europe and Canada both grew on e-commerce and first-aid product demand. That gives the top-line story more breadth than a single-quarter event.

CEO Walter C. Johnsen noted that My Medic integration is progressing on plan, with retail and distribution commitments already forming for 2027. Because My Medic is a direct-to-consumer business, the bulk of its profitability is expected to land in Q4 2026, consistent with its seasonal pattern, making the current quarter only a partial read on the acquisition's contribution.
The planned closure of the DMT sharpening plant in Massachusetts is the other forward-looking factor worth tracking, with production shifting to other locations and offshore and the company expecting annual savings exceeding $1.0 million beginning in 2027. Rising transportation and raw material costs remain a headwind that management says it is addressing through new robotics, competitive sourcing, and the operational consolidation the DMT closure represents.
