Hyperscaler revenue rose more than 200% year over year on data center interconnect demand, even as revenue missed expectations. The earnings beat leaned on gross margin help from tariff refunds that management says mostly disappears next quarter. Q4 guidance shows whether AI demand offsets that.

ADTRAN earned $0.09 per share on a non-GAAP basis in Q3 2026, more than doubling the $0.035 consensus estimate. The source of the beat matters more than its size.

Roughly 200 basis points of the non-GAAP gross margin came from IEEPA tariff refunds that management has flagged as largely nonrecurring. That means the profit upside is partially mechanical, and a significant portion of it is expected to disappear when Q4 results arrive.

The genuine bright spot is optical networking, where hyperscaler revenue surged more than 200% year over year on data center interconnect demand. That mix shift toward higher-growth customers is the structural story underneath a noisy quarter.

Revenue of $281.2 million came in missing expectations and was essentially flat year over year. Subscriber Solutions fell 13% and U.S. regional service provider access purchases remained weak, keeping top-line growth muted even as optical accelerated.

For Q4 2026, ADTRAN guided to a non-GAAP operating margin of 1.0% to 5.0%, a wide range reflecting supply uncertainty, seasonality, and the shrinking tariff tailwind. Whether optical momentum offsets those headwinds is the open question.

Looking further out, LiteWave 800 customer trials are expected to begin in the first half of 2027 with production scaling in the second half, and MicroMux Quattro is on track for a first-half 2027 release. Those product launches represent ADTRAN's bid to convert the current hyperscaler interest into durable revenue growth beyond the near-term tariff noise.
