Albemarle swung to a $296.8 million GAAP net profit in Q3 2026 from a loss of $160.7 million in the same quarter a year earlier, a turnaround almost entirely powered by a recovery in lithium pricing. Average realized prices in the Energy Storage segment nearly doubled to $20.02 per kilogram of lithium carbonate equivalent from $10.28 a year ago, lifting that segment's adjusted EBITDA by 351% to $559.8 million.

On the earnings line, adjusted EPS came in at $2.58, beating expectations of $2.53. Revenue of $1.55 billion rose 18.75% year over year but landed just under the $1.57 billion Wall Street had expected, missing expectations by less than 1%. Energy Storage segment revenue grew 57.9% while Specialties, the bromine-focused business, added 12.7%, helped by a 10% pricing gain and record quarterly production at the Jordan Bromine joint venture.

Through 2024 and into 2025, Albemarle consistently reported negative adjusted EPS, bottoming below negative $1 in Q4 2024. The rebound accelerated sharply in Q1 2026 with adjusted EPS of $2.95 and held at $3.75 in Q2, making the Q3 result of $2.58 a sequential step down even as it remained firmly profitable.

Management was explicit about what to expect next: Q4 results will face pressure from both softer lithium market pricing and higher-cost spodumene inventory working through the system. That combination is expected to push Q4 net sales, adjusted EBITDA, and margins lower on a sequential basis, so the direction of travel in the near term is clearly downward even if the year-on-year comparison remains favorable.

On the brighter side, Albemarle raised its full-year Specialties adjusted EBITDA guidance to $350 million to $375 million, up from a prior range of $275 million to $325 million, citing pricing gains and productivity improvements. Capital expenditure guidance was trimmed to $300 million to $350 million, down from roughly $500 million, reflecting capital efficiency efforts and the resequencing of early-stage projects. CEO Kent Masters also noted that global lithium demand is up 48% year-to-date through August, driven by electric vehicles and energy storage, underpinning the company's longer-run confidence even as the near-term pricing environment softens.
