The beat was built on $7.6 million of Section 45Z tax credits that did not exist a year ago, even as gross profit fell and the corn crush margin compressed. Management now guides to at least $20 million of net 45Z credits for 2026, with Pekin debottlenecking capacity arriving by year-end to qualify more gallons.

Alto Ingredients posted Q3 2026 earnings per share of $0.16, beating the consensus estimate by roughly 52%, with revenue also beating expectations. On the surface it looks like a clean beat on both lines.

Gross profit fell roughly 37% to $14.8 million as the Board corn crush margin compressed to $0.30 per gallon. Higher corn costs outpaced a firmer ethanol sales price, and operating income fell nearly 59% year over year.

The profit figure was rescued in large part by $7.6 million of Section 45Z transferable tax credits, a line item that did not exist in Q3 2025. Without that credit, the earnings beat would have looked very different. CEO Bryon McGregor said the company now expects a minimum of $20 million in net 45Z credits for all of 2026, reflecting lower carbon intensity scores at the Columbia facility and Pekin dry mill.

One concrete growth lever is a first-of-its-kind multi-year agreement with a local farmer cooperative to supply low carbon intensity corn to the Pekin campus, with the 45Z benefit shared between Alto and the cooperative's members. The company also cut year-to-date debt by $26.5 million, and total liabilities fell more than 22% year over year.

The near-term catalyst to watch is the Pekin dry mill debottlenecking project, which management says is on track to bring higher production capacity online by year-end 2026. More qualifying gallons means more 45Z credit potential and, the company argues, additional gross margin heading into 2027.
