Data centers and hyperscalers are now big enough to reset the whole plan: American Electric Power expanded its five-year capital budget to $100 billion through 2031. Earnings and revenue both beat expectations, and management introduced 2027 and 2028 EPS targets.

American Electric Power's third-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $2.23 per share topped expectations, and the demand surge flowing through its wires is reaching the bottom line.

The driver is structural: load across AEP's vertically integrated utilities rose 9.8% year over year as data centers, hyperscalers, and manufacturers connect to the grid faster. Incremental contracted load is now expected to reach 84 gigawatts by 2031.

That demand backdrop pushed management to expand the five-year capital plan to $100 billion through 2031, targeting a rate base of $162 billion. Take-or-pay agreements with large customers are expected to offset up to $21 billion in fixed costs for residential customers, up from a prior $16 billion estimate.

AEP guided full-year 2026 operating earnings to at or above the high end of its $6.25 to $6.55 per share range and introduced 2027 and 2028 targets behind an expected 9% to 11% annual earnings growth rate through 2031. Visibility two years out is an uncommon step for a utility of this scale.
