American Financial Group (AFG) Q3 2026: Beat, Special Dividend, and a One-Time Windfall
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on November 4, 2026.
A $3.50 special dividend, roughly $290 million, lands with shareholders of record November 16, funded by a quarter where $1.21 of core earnings came from the one-time Charleston Harbor marina sale. Strip that out and the insurance engine still held up: net written premiums rose 9% with renewal pricing up about 6% excluding workers' comp.

American Financial Group reported adjusted earnings of $3.97 per share for the third quarter of 2026, topping the consensus estimate of roughly $3.82 by about 4%. Revenue of $2.58 billion ran nearly 25% ahead of expectations and climbed 12% from a year earlier. What drove those headline numbers matters for judging run-rate earnings power.
A significant portion of the quarter's strength came from a single event: the August 2026 sale of Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina. That transaction generated $126 million in pretax net investment income, contributing $1.21 of the $3.97 reported core earnings per share. Strip that out and the underlying result was still solid, though more modest. GAAP EPS came in lower at $3.40, reduced by after-tax realized investment losses of $28 million and a special asbestos and environmental charge of $19 million after tax related to former railroad and manufacturing sites.
The core insurance franchise held its ground. Net written premiums rose 9% and renewal pricing increased roughly 6% excluding workers' compensation, about a point better than the second quarter. Property and Transportation underwriting profit improved, helped by agricultural and transportation lines, and Specialty Casualty also expanded its underwriting contribution. The one soft spot was Specialty Financial, where an isolated large loss in European operations and less favorable reserve development pulled that segment's underwriting profit down to $23 million from $51 million in the prior year.

The board declared a $3.50 per-share special dividend for shareholders of record November 16, with payment set for November 25, representing approximately $290 million in aggregate. That brings total special dividends declared since the start of 2021 to $59.00 per share, underscoring management's willingness to return excess capital rather than let it sit idle. The most recent regular quarterly dividend of $0.97 per share was paid October 23.
CEO Carl Lindner called the quarter's pretax property and casualty operating income a new third-quarter record and cited an annualized core operating return on equity of 26%. Looking ahead, management expressed confidence in the company's positioning entering the fourth quarter, pointing to renewal rate momentum and significant excess capital available for dividends, share repurchases, organic growth, and acquisitions in specialty niche businesses. Alternative investment returns averaged 6.7% annualized in the quarter, up from 6.2% a year earlier, and management said it expects that figure to average 10% or better over the longer term.
