American Water Works posted Q3 2026 adjusted EPS of $2.00, missing expectations, with unfavorable weather and higher purchased water, power, and chemicals costs pressuring both lines.
Regulated Businesses net income still rose to $407 million, lifted by new rates effective in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Management narrowed 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $6.07 to $6.12 and set a standalone 2027 range that excludes the pending combination with Essential Utilities.

The Essential Utilities merger remains on track to close by the end of Q1 2027, with three states already approving the deal and rate cases pending in five other jurisdictions. How smoothly the remaining approvals land is the biggest variable for shareholders over the next two quarters.
Capital deployment runs at scale regardless of the merger outcome: American Water invested $2.8 billion in the first nine months of 2026 and added roughly 81,000 customer connections.
