Ashland Q4 2026: Hopewell drag, a GAAP loss, and 2027 guidance
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on November 3, 2026.
A 31% drop in Specialty Additives adjusted EBITDA, blamed on weak Energy and Resources demand and poor productivity at the Hopewell plant, pushed adjusted EPS below consensus and left GAAP results at a loss from continuing operations of $17 million. Management says the Hopewell drag is finished now that capital work is complete, and guided fiscal 2027 adjusted EBITDA to $405 million to $435 million. That guidance is the number to judge the turnaround on.

Ashland's fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 ended with adjusted EPS of $1.12, missing expectations of $1.27. Revenue of $498 million also came in short of the estimate, while still growing from the same period a year earlier.
The adjusted shortfall traced largely to Specialty Additives, where segment adjusted EBITDA fell 31%. Management pointed to two culprits: soft demand in Energy and Resources end markets, and poor productivity at the Hopewell hydroxyethylcellulose plant. The GAAP result was worse still, with Ashland reporting a loss from continuing operations of $17 million, burdened by asset impairments in Life Sciences, a cumulative translation adjustment from liquidating its Argentine entity, and a cluster of restructuring and environmental charges.
The brighter spots in the quarter were Life Sciences and Personal Care. Pharma sales rose roughly 6%, a sixth consecutive quarter of year-over-year volume growth, and Life Sciences adjusted EBITDA margin reached what management described as the highest in the segment's history. Personal Care revenue also grew, with double-digit gains in biofunctional actives, microbial protection, and hair care.

Management's central argument for why the worst is over rests on Hopewell: capital investments at the plant are now complete, and the productivity drag that defined the quarter is described as finished. The key number for investors to hold against that claim is the fiscal 2027 adjusted EBITDA guidance range of $405 million to $435 million, alongside a stronger U.S. dollar flagged as a headwind of $20 million to $25 million to sales.
EPS history adds useful context. Over the past several quarters Ashland has repeatedly fallen short of adjusted EPS estimates, including again in Q4 2026. The one exception was Q1 2026, when reported EPS of $0.26 edged past the estimate. That pattern is part of why the 2027 EBITDA range will be watched as closely as any single quarterly number.
