American Express is adding Gen Z cardholders at a 40% growth rate, a pace that dwarfs every other generation on its books.
That gap matters because it signals which customers the company is winning at the earliest and most formative stage of their financial lives, before loyalty and spending habits are locked in elsewhere.
Robinhood and Capital One have both pushed deeper into the premium card space, making it harder and more expensive to acquire younger, creditworthy customers.
If American Express can retain even a meaningful share of that 40% cohort as incomes rise, the long-run revenue implications are significant given the premium fees attached to its flagship products.
