Barings BDC Q3 2026: Dividend Covered, but Leverage Rises and Refinancing Looms
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on November 5, 2026.
Net investment income exactly covered the $0.26 dividend, with no cushion left over, and leverage climbed to 1.28x debt-to-equity from 1.23x. The $396.3 million CLO priced this month is what repays the $350 million of 3.300% notes maturing November 23, so the refinancing is the thing to track.

Barings BDC reported net investment income of $0.26 per share for the third quarter of 2026, exactly matching the $0.26 dividend it declared for the fourth quarter as well. That zero-cushion coverage leaves the dividend supported with no buffer if income slips even modestly in the quarters ahead. NAV per share stood at $10.92, down from $11.09 at year-end 2025.
Total investment income of $64.3 million beat the $63.5 million analyst estimate, the one clean beat in the report. Year over year, investment income fell 9.5% from $72.4 million, with interest income from non-control investments sliding to $40.4 million from $47.8 million. Payment-in-kind interest income, which represents interest collected in additional securities rather than cash, rose to $6.4 million from $5.2 million, a trend investors in BDCs typically monitor as a credit quality signal.
Leverage moved higher, with the debt-to-equity ratio climbing to 1.28x from 1.23x last quarter. The company did fund $196 million of new investments in the quarter, including $121.4 million across 20 new portfolio companies, growing the total portfolio to $2.5 billion across 349 companies. Net realized losses of $4.8 million, or $0.05 per share, weighed on the headline net increase in net assets from operations, which came to $0.24 per share after accounting for $2.2 million of net unrealized appreciation.

The most consequential near-term event is the refinancing of $350 million in notes carrying a 3.300% coupon that mature November 23, 2026. To address that, Barings priced a $396.3 million CLO at Term SOFR plus 1.64%, with proceeds intended to retire the maturing notes alongside credit facility borrowings. The CLO was expected to close in mid-November, so the execution of that transaction is the primary thing to track as the company moves into the fourth quarter.
After the quarter ended, Barings made roughly $70.9 million of new commitments, funding $36.2 million at a weighted average debt yield of 11.1%, mostly in first lien debt. The board declared a fourth-quarter dividend of $0.26 per share, payable December 9 to shareholders of record December 2, holding the payout flat with the third quarter. Whether NII can sustain even that level given the year-over-year revenue contraction will be the central question on the November 6 earnings call.
