BCE Q3 2026 Earnings: A Big Miss Funded by a Bigger AI Bet
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on November 5, 2026.
Earnings came in nearly 24% below consensus, the first real miss in two years, as capital spending jumped 49% to fund the Bell AI Fabric data centre and the Ziply Fiber build. Management still reaffirmed 2026 guidance of 1% to 5% revenue growth and the $1.75 annualized dividend, so the question is whether the AI build pays off before free cash flow thins further.

BCE's adjusted earnings per share of $0.53 missed expectations against a consensus estimate of $0.70, and revenue of $4.43 billion also came in missing expectations. The year-ago quarter included roughly $5.18 billion in net investment gains from BCE's sale of its MLSE stake, a one-time windfall that made any clean year-over-year comparison on a GAAP basis almost impossible to clear.
The main engine of the miss was capital spending, which surged 49% to fund construction of the Bell AI Fabric data centre in Saskatchewan and the ongoing Ziply Fiber fiber-to-the-premises build in the United States. Free cash flow fell 16% as that spending ran ahead of near-term returns. The company acknowledged that higher depreciation, amortization, and interest expense are expected to weigh on adjusted EPS through the rest of the guidance period.
Bell Business Markets grew revenue 9.2%, with AI-powered solutions revenue up 41%. Bell Media posted 9.7% revenue growth, helped by FIFA World Cup 2026 demand and Crave subscriber growth of 21% to 5.15 million. Operating cash flow rose nearly 16%, supported by working capital timing and lower taxes and interest paid in the period.

Two structural moves announced alongside the results deserve attention from investors weighing BCE's balance sheet trajectory. Management signed a deal to sell a 49.9% stake in a new wireless tower infrastructure company to La Caisse for C$2.45 billion, surfacing value from tower assets while retaining operating control. BCE also signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the Government of Saskatchewan to explore up to 900 megawatts of additional Bell AI Fabric capacity, which would create a potential path to 1.2 gigawatts of total capacity.
Despite the earnings shortfall, management reaffirmed full-year 2026 guidance, including revenue growth of 1% to 5%, free cash flow of $2.10 billion to $2.30 billion, and the $1.75 annualized common dividend. The 3.5x net debt leverage target by end of 2027 was also left unchanged. The central question for investors is whether the AI data centre and U.S. fiber build generate sufficient returns to stabilize free cash flow before the pressure from elevated capital spending becomes harder to absorb.
