CMS Energy Q3 2026: NorthStar Wind-Down Clears Path to Pure Utility
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 27, 2026.
Nearly all earnings become utility-based after 2027: management reaffirmed 2026 and 2027 adjusted guidance and says the NorthStar Clean Energy wind-down finishes by year-end, with the restructuring removing more than $500 million of funding needs through 2030. The NorthStar impairment buried GAAP earnings, while adjusted results beat expectations.

Adjusted earnings per share of $1.44 beat expectations for the third quarter of 2026, with revenue rising from the year-ago period on favorable rate outcomes, renewables and investment growth, and weather impacts from a hot summer with storms.
A $456 million pre-tax impairment and restructuring charge tied to the wind-down of NorthStar Clean Energy pushed GAAP EPS down to $0.39, compared with $0.92 in the same quarter a year earlier. A tax benefit on those charges partially cushioned the blow, but the headline number will look jarring to anyone who does not separate the one-time items from the underlying business.
The NorthStar wind-down is on schedule for completion by year-end, and once finished the company expects nearly 100% of its earnings to come from regulated utility operations after 2027 while eliminating more than $500 million in funding needs through 2030. CEO Garrick Rochow said the restructuring "enhances earnings quality, provides greater financial flexibility, and positions us to make the long-term utility investments needed to serve our customers and grow our communities."

Management reaffirmed its 2026 and 2027 adjusted EPS targets with continued confidence toward the high end of both ranges, backed by a $24 billion utility capital investment plan covering 2026 through 2030.
Investors keeping score will note that CMS has not missed the consensus estimate in any of the eight quarters shown, with the quarter directly before this one meeting estimates exactly.
