One borrower broke the quarter: a $4.3 million charge-off after auctioned collateral came up short pushed credit provisions sharply higher, and earnings missed expectations as a result. Loans still grew and the efficiency ratio improved, so the question is whether this is isolated or the first crack.

One commercial loan relationship drove the quarter's miss: collateral sold at auction for far less than expected, forcing a $4.30 million charge-off that lifted the provision for credit losses. Reported GAAP EPS of $1.43 came in missing expectations.

Underlying, the business looked healthier, with net interest income growing 9.9% year over year and loan balances expanding at a 13.8% annualized pace. Noninterest income rose 16.9% year over year, led by trust and wealth management revenue and loan-related fees.

The loan growth story carries weight on its own, with commercial, residential and consumer indirect portfolios all expanding in the quarter. Net income of $25.89 million still rose 8.28% from a year ago despite the provision hit.

The risks run past the charge-off itself: net interest margin compressed 17 basis points sequentially to 3.63% while funding costs and unrealized securities losses both rose. Accruing loans 30 to 89 days past due also ticked up from the prior quarter, which will draw scrutiny after this single-borrower credit event.

The question heading into Q4 2026 is whether the auction shortfall was a one-time anomaly or an early signal of stress in the commercial book. The bank had beaten estimates in five of the prior six quarters before this miss, so a single outlier event is plausible. A declared dividend of $0.71 per share signals board confidence.
