AI fiber is now the whole story: Optical Communications sales rose 44% year over year to $2.38 billion, enough to carry an EPS beat even as total revenue missed expectations. Management guided Q4 core sales higher, so the buildout demand is still accelerating.

Corning's Optical Communications segment has effectively become the engine of the entire company, with sales in the division reaching $2.38 billion in Q3 2026, up 44% year over year and Gen AI product sales more than doubling over the same stretch. That growth lifted adjusted EPS to $0.91, beating expectations, even as total GAAP revenue missed expectations.

Glass Innovations, which includes the display and specialty glass businesses, slipped 3% year over year, and softer TV, notebook, and smartphone markets tied to memory pricing weighed on the segment. Solar is still ramping and recorded a net loss in the quarter. Neither situation is new, but together they kept the top line below analyst expectations despite the strength in fiber.

What keeps the bull case intact is the margin and cash story. Core gross margin expanded to 40.5% and core operating margin widened as well, with adjusted free cash flow positive even while the company spent heavily on capital expenditures to keep pace with demand. CEO Wendell P. Weeks noted Corning also secured four long-term, multibillion-dollar customer agreements during the quarter, including deals with Verizon and AT&T.

The Q4 outlook is where management made its confidence explicit, with core sales guided to a range of $5.2 billion to $5.3 billion and core EPS guided higher than a year ago. Both figures sit above the revenue level that tripped up Q3, and the sequential step-up suggests the AI-driven fiber buildout has not plateaued.

Longer term, Corning is pressing its Springboard Plan, which targets doubling its annualized sales run rate from $20 billion to $40 billion by the end of 2030, with earnings expected to grow faster than sales. Six consecutive quarters of EPS beats, an accelerating backlog of customer commitments in optical, and expanding margins point to a company whose story has narrowed considerably: the more fiber the hyperscalers need, the more central Corning becomes.
