Third-quarter 2026 GAAP diluted EPS of $0.57 beat expectations, and revenue of $4.02 billion also cleared estimates, setting a positive tone for railroad earnings season.
The profitability jump traces to fuel surcharge revenue, which nearly doubled to $466 million and lifted operating margin to 39.1%. The prior-year quarter was also weighed down by a non-cash goodwill impairment charge tied to Quality Carriers.
Volume growth was broad-based, with total volume up 5% and intermodal leading at 7% on customer wins and a tightening truck market. Merchandise, coal and Metals and Equipment all added revenue in the quarter.

CEO Steve Angel described the quarter as a product of disciplined execution and pointed toward continued progress against a best-in-class performance target set for 2027. The company also repurchased 11 million shares during the quarter.
