PNC's national expansion is already showing up in profitability: an 18.3% return on average tangible common equity in the third quarter, which CEO William S. Demchak tied directly to deepening the bank's footprint in key markets.

ROTCE strips out goodwill and intangibles, so that reading signals PNC is pulling meaningful returns from the capital actually available to common shareholders.

Demchak called the quarter a continuation of momentum built through the first half, with consistency across three quarters backing the expansion case.

Durability is the open question as the rate environment shifts and the costs of building national presence accumulate. Holders will be watching whether Q3's number is a ceiling or a baseline.
