Buying 60 Applebee's restaurants added $36.9 million in company-owned sales for Dine Brands, but those locations ran at a loss and EPS came in short of estimates. Nine-month operating cash flow fell to $37.8 million from $83.3 million, a real problem for a company carrying $1.19 billion in long-term debt.

Dine Brands Global posted Q3 2026 revenue of $248.9 million, a 15.1% year-over-year increase that beat the $239.7 million consensus by 3.83%. The growth came almost entirely from one move: the acquisition of 60 Applebee's restaurants since February 2026, which brought the company-owned count to 118 units and added $36.9 million in company-owned sales.

The problem is that those restaurants are losing money at the gross margin line. Company-owned restaurant expenses exceeded the revenue those locations generated, keeping overall gross profit roughly flat at $84.7 million despite the sales surge, and dragging pre-tax income down to $6.7 million from $10.0 million a year ago. Adjusted EPS came in at $0.82, missing the $0.9757 estimate by nearly 16%. GAAP diluted EPS was just $0.37 after accounting for closure and impairment charges, intangible amortization, and other items.

The cash picture is where the pressure becomes hard to ignore. Nine-month operating cash flow fell to $37.8 million from $83.3 million in the same period a year earlier, a drop of more than half. That matters because Dine carries $1.19 billion in long-term debt and a stockholders' deficit of $293.1 million, leaving little margin for error if the acquired restaurants continue to run in the red.

The two legacy franchise brands showed modest same-restaurant sales growth, with Applebee's domestic comparable sales up 0.9% and IHOP up 0.8%. Fuzzy's Taco Shop moved the other way, posting a 2.7% domestic same-restaurant sales decline. Net restaurant count also contracted, with 28 Applebee's and IHOP closures outpacing 23 openings in the quarter. CEO John Peyton pointed to everyday value, menu innovation, and operational execution as drivers of the positive comp trends at the two main brands.

Adjusted EBITDA held at $49.0 million, and a lower diluted share count of 12.2 million versus 14.4 million a year ago provided some support to per-share results. The company also repurchased approximately $6.5 million of common stock during Q3 and $35.9 million across the first nine months of 2026, a notable allocation of capital for a business whose operating cash flow is declining sharply. How quickly the company-owned Applebee's portfolio moves from loss-making to profitable will be the central question heading into Q4.
