Essent Group delivered a split verdict for the third quarter of 2026. Total revenues rose 17.4% year over year to $374.18 million, clearing the $364.29 million consensus by 2.72%. On the bottom line, however, GAAP diluted EPS of $1.82 came in just below the $1.87 analyst estimate, missing expectations by 2.65%.
The culprit behind the earnings shortfall was the rapidly expanding reinsurance segment. Net premiums earned in that segment surged to $64.0 million from $16.3 million a year ago, but the loss ratio jumped to 48.5% from just 0.4% over the same period. That sharp deterioration pressured combined profitability even as the mortgage insurance business continued to generate revenue.
The EPS figure itself was helped along by an aggressive buyback program that reduced the diluted share count to roughly 89.8 million from 98.5 million a year earlier. Net income came in at $163.38 million, essentially flat versus $164.22 million in Q3 2025 despite the revenue growth, reflecting the offsetting drag from higher losses and a $3.44 million discrete tax expense tied to investment gains.

Looking at the recent EPS history, Essent has delivered a mixed pattern against estimates, beating in Q1 and Q2 2026 before this quarter's modest miss. The board signaled continued confidence in the capital return story by authorizing a new $500 million share repurchase program running through year-end 2028, alongside a quarterly cash dividend of $0.35 per share payable December 10 to shareholders of record December 1.
The key risk to monitor is the trajectory of mortgage defaults, which rose to 21,919 loans in default representing 2.75% of the portfolio, up from 18,583 and 2.29% a year ago. The consolidated provision for losses also climbed to $83.5 million from $44.9 million. Whether the reinsurance loss ratio stabilizes as that non-mortgage book matures is the central question hanging over the stock's near-term re-rating potential.
