There is no getting out of this lightly or easily. First off, when can you become employed again? If you need a car, then simply turning this in and getting a cheaper is not an option with the negative equity.

A $975 monthly EV lease with no home charging turned into a trap: dealer bids on the truck range from the $20,000s to $40,000 against Ford Credit's $61,872 buyout. The thread's verdict is that early lease exits almost always cost more than riding out the term.

A widely read r/personalfinance post describes a 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning XLT leased in July 2025 in California for roughly $975 a month. The poster then lost their job and has no home charging, paying public-station rates on top of the lease and insurance.

Ford Credit's buyout figure is $61,872, far above what dealers will bid, leaving the poster with tens of thousands in negative equity. CarMax declined to appraise the vehicle at all, because Ford restricts third-party lease buyouts.

The top comment, from RagingWillyz with 284 upvotes, put it plainly: there is no getting out of this lightly or easily, and simply turning the truck in and getting a cheaper vehicle is not a straightforward option given the negative equity. Other commenters echoed that early lease termination almost always costs more than riding out the remaining payments, and that a voluntary return would leave a negative credit mark affecting the poster for years.

Because the truck is leased, the poster does not own the asset and cannot simply sell it to cover the gap. Depreciation on the electric truck is steep, and that loss belongs to Ford Credit unless the lessee buys the truck out first. A Ford dealer told the poster that rolling the negative equity into a new deal pushes monthly payments higher.

For Ford investors, the thread is a retail-level signal of how quickly EV residual values can deteriorate and how that affects the lease math that automakers use to move inventory. A lease that looked attractive at signing in mid-2025 has become a liability for this borrower less than 18 months later, with dealer bids coming in at a fraction of the contractual buyout price.
