A seven-quarter run of beating Wall Street expectations is over: adjusted EPS of $1.78 for Q3 2026 came in missing expectations, with revenue also missing expectations even as it grew from the same period a year ago.
GAAP diluted EPS slipped to $1.72 from $1.84 a year ago, with the absence of the net investment gains that had lifted Q3 2025 results driving the decline. Operating income and net income both fell year over year, even as total revenue moved higher.
The Title Insurance and Services segment carried the quarter, with U.S. commercial revenues rising 21% to $297.4 million. Higher average revenue per commercial order and agent premium growth helped offset a decline in direct title orders closed, which reflected continued softness in residential real estate activity.
CEO Mark Seaton pointed directly to the rate environment as the central challenge: the recent increase in mortgage rates reinforces our expectation for a weaker residential origination market over a longer period. The company's response is to lean into AI-native title and settlement platforms, which management says will enhance the customer experience, improve operating efficiency, and position First American for stronger earnings growth as the market recovers.
The company raised its annual dividend 11% to $2.44 per share while keeping share repurchase activity modest. With cash and equivalents down year over year, the balance between funding the technology rollout and sustaining shareholder returns is what investors need to track in a sluggish origination environment.
