First National delivered adjusted diluted earnings of $0.76 per share in Q3 2026, surpassing expectations, with revenue also clearing the analyst estimate. The result marks the biggest earnings beat this Virginia community bank has delivered in two years.

The central driver was a sharp expansion in net interest margin, which rose to 4.38% from 3.84% a year earlier. A significant portion of that lift came from acquisition accounting accretion tied to purchased loan payoffs, with earning asset yields climbing quarter-over-quarter as well.

Asset quality remained tight, with no provision for credit losses booked during the quarter and non-accrual loans at just 0.31% of total loans. Net income rose 24% year over year, while shareholders' equity grew nearly 8%.

First National completed the closure and consolidation of three banking offices during Q3 as part of a branch optimization effort that will trim its network to 28 offices by year-end, and in early October it finalized the sale of two North Carolina offices, a transaction expected to contribute a one-time gain to Q4 2026 results. CEO Scott C. Harvard called the quarter a record financial performance and pointed to organic loan growth of 3.6% annualized as evidence that the core lending business is expanding across all markets.

The sustainability of that margin boost is the open question, since the accretion income that padded Q3 results is tied to purchased loans paying off, a source the bank itself has flagged as set to decline over time. Unrealized losses on the available-for-sale securities portfolio also widened to $21.4 million, a figure worth keeping in view as the bank restructures its branch footprint and redirects resources toward faster-growing markets.
