Fiserv's third-quarter adjusted results beat expectations on both lines, but beneath them sits a $6.45 billion non-cash goodwill impairment that makes the GAAP numbers nearly unreadable.

The impairment was triggered by sustained declines in the company's share price and market capitalization, and it is not the only source of margin pressure. Adjusted operating margin narrowed to 31.2% from 37.0%, squeezed by One Fiserv transformation expenses and severance costs.

CEO Takis Georgakopoulos pointed to banking attrition trending down more than 25% year to date and Clover's momentum as signs the restructuring is gaining traction.

Management reaffirmed its full-year 2026 outlook and raised its Project Elevate cost-savings target to $1 billion. The company also plans to resume share repurchases in the fourth quarter, a signal of confidence despite goodwill taking a hit.
