Cost inflation, not demand, is now the binding constraint: earnings of $1.24 narrowly missed expectations as ocean freight rates and a peso translation hit squeezed gross margin to 22.0%. Orders and backlog both expanded, so the pressure is on the cost line.

Twelve straight quarters of year-over-year sales growth continued as Flexsteel Industries posted fiscal first-quarter net sales of $113.97 million, beating expectations. Flexsteel branded products grew while the Homestyles ready-to-assemble category, which the company is exiting, contracted sharply.

Gross margin compressed 150 basis points to 22.0%, the figure that matters more than GAAP earnings of $1.24 per diluted share missing expectations. Ocean freight rates, higher fuel and material costs, and unfavorable peso translation in Mexico pushed operating income lower than a year ago.

Demand itself is not the problem. Orders grew 5% and ending backlog expanded 8.2% versus the prior-year period, which means the pipeline going into Q2 looks healthy. The burden falls squarely on the cost side, and management's ability to offset freight and currency pressure through productivity improvements and portfolio discipline will determine how much of that backlog converts into profit.

For fiscal Q2 2027, Flexsteel guided net sales of $119.5 million to $123.0 million, with a GAAP operating margin of 6.5% to 7.0%. Management flagged consumer confidence, affordability constraints, geopolitical uncertainty, and evolving tariff policies as the key variables behind that range. The guidance implies a sequential step-up in profitability, so freight rate and peso trends are the numbers to monitor.
