London's decline looked restrained next to Frankfurt, where the DAX finished down 1.05% on the same session.
Selling arrived in earnest around mid-morning in both London and Frankfurt, pushing losses to their widest point well before the afternoon. The FTSE clawed back some ground late in the day, though not enough to avoid a negative close.
