The FTSE 100 shed 115.5 points to finish at 14,259, a restrained loss next to the selling across the Channel. Germany's industrial-heavy DAX was the clear underperformer of the day.
Selling pressure built through the morning and intensified into the afternoon before the index trimmed losses into the close. The move points to broad-based repositioning across the market.
The CAC 40 in Paris also finished lower, off around 0.9%, making the decline continent-wide. Investors with diversified European exposure had nowhere to hide across the major benchmarks.
With Germany leading the downside, the session adds to a pattern of the continent's industrial core absorbing the steepest moves on risk-off days. How the DAX opens next session will be the first signal of whether that pressure is easing or settling in further.
