Gilead is sending shareholders about $1.02 billion in cash, 82 cents a share, landing September 29 and dwarfing every other payment today. Xcel Energy, Ares Capital, T. Rowe Price and Valley National Bancorp round out the biggest checks.

Gilead Sciences holds the largest payment of today's ex-date group, sending $1.02 billion in cash to shareholders of record. Miss the September 15 ex-date and you miss that check entirely.

Xcel Energy is next in line with a $370 million aggregate payout, followed by Ares Capital's $344.7 million distribution, relevant for investors who prioritize business development company income.

T. Rowe Price rounds out the mid-tier payments with roughly $277 million, alongside Valley National Bancorp's preferred shares delivering about $166 million.

The five companies on today's ex-date represent more than $2 billion in cash going out to shareholders in a single dividend cycle. Shares purchased on or after September 15 do not qualify for any of these distributions.
