United American's health unit swung to a $6.4 million underwriting loss on severity claims at Evry and a CMS processing delay, pushing both lines below consensus and trimming full-year operating income guidance. Management calls the hit isolated, pointing to higher 2027 guidance and a raised buyback target.

Globe Life posted adjusted earnings of $4.84 per diluted share for Q3 2026, missing the consensus estimate, with revenue also coming in below expectations despite growing from a year ago. Investors are focused on the source of the miss.

The culprit was United American's health division, which swung from a $16.1 million underwriting gain a year ago to a $6.4 million underwriting loss in the quarter. Two forces drove that reversal: high-severity claims at Evry, a developing group health business, and a CMS claims processing delay that pushed excess Medicare Supplement claims into Q3.

Management trimmed full-year 2026 net operating income guidance to $15.35 to $15.65 per share as a result of those pressures, but framed the issues as isolated rather than systemic. To support that case, the company issued 2027 guidance of $16.10 to $17.10 per share, which represents 7.1% growth at the midpoint.

Elsewhere in the business, several segments held up well, with health premium rising 16% year over year alongside gains in United American health net sales, Liberty National life net sales and Family Heritage health underwriting margin. Net investment income also rose as the fixed maturity effective yield improved.

On capital returns, Globe Life repurchased 1.1 million shares during the quarter and then raised its full-year 2026 buyback guidance above the prior range, a signal that management sees the stock as attractively valued even as it absorbs a difficult quarter in one segment.
