Greenbrier (GBX) Q4 2026: EPS Misses by Half, Backlog Turns a Corner
As seen on the 24/7 Wall St. homepage on October 26, 2026.
Greenbrier's margin problem just got loud: adjusted earnings came in at roughly half the Street's consensus as syndication delays and plant inefficiencies squeezed manufacturing. The offset investors should not miss is the first sequential backlog increase since fiscal 2024, with 3,400 new railcar orders worth $600 million.

Greenbrier Companies posted adjusted earnings of $0.39 per share for its fiscal fourth quarter, missing expectations, with revenue also missing estimates as the manufacturing downturn deepened.
The Manufacturing segment bore the brunt of the damage, as syndication timing delays and operational inefficiencies compressed gross margins to 9.2% and facility rationalization costs added further pressure.
The backlog is what investors should weigh against that weakness: Greenbrier booked 3,400 new railcar orders in the quarter, producing the first sequential backlog increase since fiscal 2024. The growing lease fleet builds a recurring revenue base that cushions results when manufacturing cycles turn.

CEO Lorie L. Tekorius pointed to early-stage tailwinds heading into fiscal 2027, noting that rail traffic increases and elevated diesel prices have already lifted inquiries in North America as freight shippers look to move more goods by rail. She acknowledged that tariff uncertainty, particularly in tank cars, delayed some long-lived investment decisions during the quarter.
For fiscal 2027, management guided to revenue of $2.8 billion to $3.2 billion, a meaningful recovery from fiscal 2026, though execution on the manufacturing side will need to improve for the company to reach the upper end. Greenbrier also declared its 50th consecutive quarterly dividend of $0.34 per share, payable December 2 to shareholders of record November 11.
