The Hang Seng edged just a fraction above Friday's close at the August 24 open, with the SSE Composite on the mainland showing no movement at all. When both major regional benchmarks refuse to commit in either direction at the bell, it typically signals that institutional traders are holding positions and waiting rather than acting on conviction.
A market sitting on a razor-thin opening gap has no cushion in either direction, meaning the first meaningful headline of the session carries outsized weight against a backdrop of very little pre-positioned risk.

The Hang Seng has worked its way up from the low 3200s over the past two weeks to arrive just above 3317 at Friday's close. Monday's open landing nearly on top of that number means the recovery is still intact, but it has not been confirmed by any meaningful follow-through buying.
