Credit is the line to watch now: net charge-offs rose to 0.31% annualized as both EPS and revenue came in just under expectations. Acquisition costs from Cadence and Veritex and a sequential drop in noninterest income did the damage, even with net interest margin expanding.

A streak of beats stretching back through most of 2024 and 2025 just ended: adjusted earnings of $0.38 per share for Q3 2026 came in essentially flat with consensus, with revenue missing expectations. The shortfall was narrow, but how it happened is what matters now.

Noninterest income slid 8% sequentially as capital markets fees softened and strategic investment valuations moved unfavorably. Net interest income grew year over year with margin expanding on higher investment securities yields and lower borrowings, partly offsetting that drag.

The Cadence Bank and Veritex Holdings acquisitions define this quarter, with total assets up nearly 37% year over year on full-quarter consolidation of those deals. Integration costs remain a real drag on reported results.

Credit quality is where investors will focus heading into Q4, with net charge-offs rising to 0.31% annualized from 0.25% the prior quarter. Nonperforming assets and commercial real estate exposure both expanded, amplified by the acquisitions but worth monitoring given the broader rate environment.

Huntington repurchased $100 million of common shares during the quarter and declared a quarterly dividend, keeping capital return intact through the integration. CEO Steve Steinour said the bank is on track to meet its financial targets, pointing to improving synergies from the recent acquisitions.
