Management raised its full-year free cash flow target to an increase of more than $1 billion, because software carried the quarter. Both lines topped consensus, and the fading mainframe cycle no longer dents the story.

Software was the clearest engine of the quarter, generating $7.8 billion in revenue as enterprise appetite for hybrid cloud held up. That gives the rest of the report a durable quality that a one-time item or a favorable tax rate cannot.

Adjusted earnings per share came in at $2.95, beating expectations, with total revenue of $17.1 billion also ahead of estimates. IBM has now exceeded estimates in six of the past eight quarters, with Q2 2026 the lone period where it met them.

Free cash flow reached $3.03 billion for the quarter, giving management enough confidence to raise the full-year free cash flow target. CEO Arvind Krishna attributed the result to disciplined execution and cited clients deploying what IBM calls Super Intelligence to transform entire operating models.

The mainframe cycle remained a drag, with IBM Z revenue falling 20% in the quarter. Distributed Infrastructure growth kept the Infrastructure segment expanding anyway, so the business mix is absorbing the Z headwind without distorting the overall picture.

IBM reaffirmed full-year 2026 constant currency revenue growth of 4 to 5%, with currency now expected to be neutral rather than a drag, and declared a quarterly dividend of $1.69 per share. The question into the seasonally stronger fourth quarter is whether Software momentum and free cash flow conversion hold.
