Refining carried the quarter: downstream earnings hit a record $1.55 billion, enough to beat on both lines even after a third-party pipeline outage shut Kearl for days and forced a cut to the 2026 production target. Management is accelerating buybacks to finish the current program by year end and says more surplus cash is coming in 2027.

Imperial Oil posted adjusted earnings of $5.11 per share in Q3 2026, beating expectations, with revenue also ahead of estimates. The beat landed despite operational disruption during the quarter.

The downstream segment drove the quarter with record earnings of $1.55 billion, helped by stronger refining margins and favorable product mix from renewable diesel volumes at the Strathcona refinery. Petroleum product sales rose on higher export volumes.

A third-party pipeline outage forced a multi-day full shutdown at Kearl, pushing upstream production down to 418 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day from 462 thousand a year earlier. Management trimmed the 2026 Kearl gross production target to 280,000 barrels per day.

Net income reached $2.45 billion, up from $539 million in Q3 2025, a prior-year figure weighed down by impairment and restructuring charges. Free cash flow funded capital spending and shareholder returns while leaving the company with a cash balance intact.

CEO John Whelan said the company is on pace to complete its normal course issuer bid before year end and is well positioned to return additional surplus cash to shareholders in the new year. A fourth-quarter dividend of 87 cents per share (Canadian) was declared. The shareholder return story extends beyond this single quarter.
