Margin expansion to 3.89% pushed Rockland Trust's parent to a record quarter and a 12% sequential jump in diluted EPS, topping consensus. Management guided to a low 3.90% reported margin in Q4 and bought back $57.4 million of stock at an average $84.60 a share.

Rockland Trust's parent company turned in its strongest quarter on record in Q3 2026, with diluted earnings of $1.90 per share beating the $1.846 consensus. Revenue of $261.95 million also cleared estimates. GAAP and operating earnings per share are identical, with no noncore adjustments required.

The engine behind the record result was net interest income of $220.66 million, up 4.6% sequentially, as the net interest margin expanded to 3.89%. That improvement reflected loan repricing, higher purchase accounting accretion, and broad-based loan growth. Average deposits rose as well, moving both sides of the balance sheet in the right direction.

Looking ahead, management guided for a reported net interest margin in the low 3.90% range in Q4, a modest increase in net interest income, and stable asset quality metrics. Core conversion costs are expected to taper in Q4 as the bank-wide technology transition nears completion. The commercial loan pipeline stood at $574 million entering Q4, the highest level in five quarters.

Capital return was also a headline item: the company repurchased approximately 679,000 shares for $57.4 million during the quarter, leaving roughly $93 million remaining under the current buyback authorization. Nonperforming loans edged up to 0.68% of total loans, driven by a single office real estate credit. The accumulated other comprehensive loss widened on unrealized losses in the securities portfolio.

Reported revenue and net income fell from a year ago, but those figures reflect a Q3 2025 base that included $34.52 million in loan loss provisions and merger costs tied to the Enterprise Bancorp acquisition. Stripping out that noise, the underlying business is producing markedly better results, with the efficiency ratio improving to 52.84% and return on average tangible common equity reaching 15.43%.
