Shares slipped after hours despite a double beat and a raised full-year sales floor, because management flagged softer fourth-quarter profitability as costs and reinvestment hit Health & Biosciences. A $236 million held-for-sale loss on the Botanicals disposal group pushed GAAP continuing operations to a per-share loss, even as Scent carried the quarter.

International Flavors and Fragrances posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.83 in the third quarter of 2026, edging past the $0.82 consensus estimate by 1.8%, while net sales of $1.94 billion topped the $1.91 billion forecast by roughly the same margin. Volume growth was broad-based across all three divisions, and management felt confident enough to raise the low end of its full-year sales guidance to $7.5 billion from $7.4 billion previously.

The headline beat did not prevent shares from slipping in after-hours trading, and the reason was squarely in the forward guidance. CEO Erik Fyrwald cautioned that fourth-quarter profitability will be softer, particularly in Health and Biosciences, as higher costs and reinvestment spending weigh on that division. The raised full-year floor gave investors something to hold onto, but a profit warning in the same breath was enough to tilt sentiment negative.

Scent was the standout segment for the quarter, with comparable currency-neutral EBITDA growing 10% and segment margin reaching 20.2%. Taste also performed well, with 6% currency-neutral sales growth led by double-digit gains in Greater Asia. Health and Biosciences contributed only modest upside, with comparable currency-neutral sales up just 1% as growth in Food Biosciences and Grain Processing was partly offset by a decline in the Health business.

The GAAP picture looked considerably worse than the adjusted numbers. A $236 million pre-tax loss tied to the Botanicals and Food Enhancements disposal group, combined with a $23 million goodwill impairment and $34 million in regulatory costs related to fragrance business investigations, pushed GAAP diluted EPS from continuing operations to a loss of $0.50 per share. Those charges are excluded from the $0.83 adjusted figure.

IFF also noted the completion of its $500 million accelerated share repurchase program during the period, and confirmed the pending Food Ingredients divestiture remains on track to close by the end of the second quarter of 2027. For investors weighing the near-term noise against the longer restructuring story, the trajectory of Health and Biosciences margin and the execution of that divestiture are the two clearest things to follow heading into the fourth quarter.
